Travel

As you arrive in Iceland, you will generally land on the International airport in Keflavik. From there it will take you around 45-60 minutes of driving through moon-like lava surroundings to get into Reykjavik, depending on your precise destination.

Reykjavik airport is the main domestic airport and you can fly all over the country from there. Other options include coaches, car rentals, hiking or biking (see the "recreation" category). Unfortunately there is no train or subway system in Iceland.

What will also help you in your travels is that most Icelandic people (admittedly much more common among young Icelanders, but with a third of the population younger than 20…well…) speak fluent English, good Danish and many at least some German, French or Spanish.

Adventure options include glacier Jeep-Trips with Arctic Ice, white water rafting (Class II rapids), snowmobile trips and other adventures with Icelandic Adventures, horse riding trips to various places in the country with IceHorses and the various adventures with a travel agency such as the one mentioned below.

An important thing to bear in mind is to always have the necessary equipment and other important items with you.

Interesting places to visit include the glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon, Thingvellir, the Blue Lagoon, the West Fjords and surrounding areas (as seen on Outdoor Life Network's TV show "Global Extremes"), the Fjords and other things in the North, such as the Myvatn area (which has the world's biggest duck sanctuary and some amazing, crater-full scenery as can be seen here and here and more on Mývatn can be found in the "geology" section), whale watching and more, the East where you will find reindeer, glaciers, forests, old Iceland Spar mining areas and more.

One common thing to do is to rent a car (or bring your own bike, backpack and tent) and travel literally around Iceland as highway nr.1 encompasses a circle around the edge of most of Iceland (not the West Fjords though), giving you a good idea of the country.
This can take a few weeks depending on the number and length of stops.

If you prefer coming to Iceland in an organised group with a travel agency, or have yet to a find a flight to Iceland, do check out www.icehydra.com who will cater for your every need.

Alternatively, for regular flights from London and Copenhagen, try the airline Iceland Express.

Lastly, check out Iceland Tourist Information at www.icelandtouristboard.com and www.icetourist.is as well as map information at the National Land Survey of Iceland here.
