Accommodation
The land known as that of Fire&Ice (or as in Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, of Ice and Snow) is truly a beautiful one and so full of contrasts that it shows you almost all of natures wonders at the same time. Or as it is put on the website www.pangaeasci.com :

"Iceland is a land of extreme contrasts, from a vigorous, lively city life to stark, barren landscapes, mountain glaciers, and the ever-present threat of natural violence. You can see them all on day outings. And you have the added thrill of standing on two plate boundaries where new crust is forming, slowly, fitfully, relentlessly, mindless of the cares and concerns of the life that clings to its surface."

Iceland's prices used to be disgracefully high for any travellers but the rich, but thankfully it has to a large extent changed. Various health spas and such are often cheaper than other countries', as are many of the tourist attractions. Unfortunately food and drink is quite expensive, but the food is usually good enough to be worth it.
(Check the food section).
Rental cars and accommodation will usually be quite expensive as well.
As finding the right accommodation is essential staying with farmers or in guesthouses is often a good option when travelling around the country.

Many sites will offer you camping areas for very little money and some farmers, when asked nicely, might even allow you to camp on their grounds for the night, in areas not used by them (as long as you clean up after yourselves and respect the environment). A more guaranteed way of accommodation around the country is actually staying with the farmers in their houses. Farmers in Iceland have a mutual organisation called Farm Holidays, which is based precisely on that idea. You get rather cheap accommodation, often in areas with no other means of accommodation, and nice homemade food with access to all facilities. Highly recommended.

A nice place to stay in the North of Iceland next to Myvatn is Hotel Reynihlid which also has a great collection of photos from the area, or Sel Hotel Myvatn .
Information on Mývatn can be seen in the geology section of this site.

For other options have a look at www.icehotel.is which has hotels all over, www.hotelisafjordur.is which is in Isafjordur, Grand Hotel in Reykjavik, Hotel KEA in Akureyri, Hotel Geysir in Haukadalur and lastly here is also a list of 9 other places of accommodation.

Obviously this is only a small sample of the places available but hopefully you will be able to find something you like.
